Canvases over a folder
Attach a folder on your Mac to a canvas and ask about it: a codebase, a project's documents, your notes. Gelim reads the folder on your Mac, and only the excerpts a question needs are sent.
What you need
- Gelim for Mac, signed in, on a Mac with Apple silicon. Folders aren't available on Intel Macs.
- Read folders on this Mac on in Settings → Canvas (it is by default).
1. Start a canvas
Press ⌘⇧N, or click + next to Canvases.
2. Attach the folder
Choose Folder, or press ⌘⇧O, and pick the folder. Choose Attach. Gelim indexes it on your Mac; the canvas shows a Folder on this Mac badge.
3. Ask
Type your question and send. The answer cites what it read, and Context shows the excerpts it used.
Keep it current
Gelim doesn't re-read the folder on its own. When the files change, open Context and choose Re-index. Choose relinks a folder you moved.
Options
In Settings → Canvas:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Read folders on this Mac | Allows folder canvases |
| Folder questions at once | 1 to 4; 2 by default |
| Show sources used under answers | Lists what each answer read |
Limits and notes
- Up to 20,000 files or 32 MB of text per folder. For a larger folder, choose a subfolder.
- What leaves your Mac: your question, the excerpts picked for it, and documents you attach. Never the whole folder.
- On your iPhone and on the web, a folder canvas opens read-only with Open on Mac.
- Quitting stops folder questions; they continue the next time you open Gelim.
